I had an absolute blast photographing Leslie and Tucker's wedding. Leslie wanted a winter wedding and she got exactly what she asked for. 💖 The snow started falling just as the ceremony began and we captured some sweet, fun moments as we celebrated their union. It was an honor meeting their families and friends, who had driven their way up from Texas for the ceremony. You could feel how much they love the couple, all the way from the decorative details to the homemade lasagna and spaghetti. Ending the day with them at their Airbnb was icing on top of the cake. With its proximity to the majestic Rocky Mountains, the state of Colorado is full to the brim with beautiful and scenic locations like none other in the world! Trust me, I've lived in the mountains for a couple of years and can attest that there is no place like the flat irons of the mile high state. Of course, with jaw-dropping places like Rocky Mountain National Park, Lily Lake, the Lost Gulch, and Chautauqua Park, its no wonder locals and tourists alike hire professional photographers to capture them in magazine-worthy locations. With my short experience, here are my five top favorite photo locations in Colorado (for now): 1. Rocky Mountain National Park ⛰️ I'd have to admit I am biased towards RMNP because I lived so close to it for a couple of years. I fell asleep to the waves of the aspen trees in the forests and saw moose, foxes, coyotes and bears leave evidence of their silent visits. 💩 The Rockies will always hold a special place in my heart, which is why it is the number one place I love to take photos at in Colorado. You are just so immersed in the mountains, there is literally no way to take a bad photo. The view while you're up there ain't bad, either. 😉 One of my favorite sessions was when Makeyla and I grabbed some neat portrait photos with Longs Peak beautifully cascaded behind her. The Great Sand Dunes National Park ⌛ I had mixed reactions to rating this so high up but I just had to. This was a 💭 dream venue and no where on earth does it compare to any other location I've ever photographed. The sunrise colors of the sky made the sand dunes pop and proved to be worthy of a 4 hour trip for Carley & Harrison's Engagement photos. The trip and hike up to the highest peak was, of course, more than worth it. The rolling sand dunes, its scenic mounds and the couple's energy together really created some ✨ magic ✨. I've can't wait for the next opportunity to photograph there again. I've always thought of hosting a styled shoot there one day but we will see! Lily Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park 🚣‍♀ Just before you head into Estes Park, you'll come across Lily Lake and be convinced to stop. This beautiful lake is surrounded by hiking trails galore and numerous spots for activities and my favorite, photos 😍 One of my favorite sessions in Lily Lake was photographing Tarah and Dustin's elopement and being able to witness love blossom at one of the world's most beautiful lakes. The Lost Gulch, Boulder 🌳 Easily one of my go-to places in Boulder to photograph, the Lost Gulch is a photographer-favorite and features a high overlook view over the front range. The overlook itself is not a very large area, but does have numerous private spots for a special conversation *ahem* that might involve someone getting down on one knee 💍🧐. Which is exactly what I got to photography at Danny's proposal to Ili at the Lost Gulch Overlook. From planning a back story and playing an acting role, we worked together to successfully surprise her (spoiler: she said yes!). Even though the weather was cloudy ☁️ and a photographer's nightmare, we captured some of my favorite pictures for these out-of-state lovers. Ahh, memories. Chautauqua Park, Boulder 🏞️ Last, but certainly not least, Chautauqua Park in Boulder is another one of my go-to locations for just about anything. With the iconic flat irons beautifully featured in the background of your photos, you can't go wrong with a quick 10 minute walk to gorgeous mountain views and scenery. Whether you are taking photos for an announcement, an engagement or just for fun, grab your partner, your best friend or your fur-child and enjoy one of the most iconic places to visit in Colorado! This list doesn't scratch the surface of all the best photo locations Colorado has to offer. Grab your hiking shoes, head on out and explore them all! Have you ever made something so perfect that you're afraid you'll never do anything better? I have. I've been protested and demonstrated agai-- oh, wrong song. No seriously, this is how I feel about my engagement shoot at the Great Sand Dunes National Park with the most electric couple, Carley and Harrison, and their fur-baby, Lady. I met them at the visitor parking of the national park's parking lot just 30 minutes before sunrise. We almost missed sunrise hiking towards the high dune, but we stopped for a second just to grab that early morning sunrise photo. We stopped at various points on our journey to the high dune, and in total, I think we took a solid 2 hours to get to the top. It was not a joke lol and severely reminded me to get back into the gym... But the views were worth it. I wish I could put into words how I felt through the heaving and sweating, but it was just so cathartic to be surrounded by giant dunes as far as the eye could see. Carley and Harrison were so natural in front of the camera and exuded chemistry from the first time I met them. I had so many poses planned but they fell into them fluidly and almost forgot I was there at some point... If you're thinking of taking photos and the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Mosca, CO, do it. It really is one of those "check off your bucket list" things to do. The park is beautiful and you just feel in awe at how big it really is. Not going to lie, it was a little bit of a challenge to get there by sunrise, but it was worth it. There were no large crowds of people to shuffle away from (or edit out) and the views were breath-taking. The next time I photograph there I'll do some at sunset and get some beautiful golden hour colors! :D People do camp out here as well, so if you're the adventurous type, well there you go! It is also a great way to bond with your photographer! Be warned, it is a sand dune so I would not recommend bringing anything you wouldn't want to be buried in sand at some point. A backpack with water is a must and any hats or face coverings to shield your face from the sun is nice. I believe now you have to wear a mask on the trail. If you're looking to have some fun, you can always bring a sand sled (are those even real things) or rent one closeby and sled your way down! If you're a photographer yourself, I would highly recommend putting protective gear over your camera body and using filters to make sure sand does not get into the cracks of your lenses/body. Be careful when switching out lenses and do so with your back against the wind. On Sept 10th I had the honor of capturing Tarah and Dustin's elopement at Lily Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. It was a beautifully intimate ceremony surrounded by the fog from the storm. We had to move it up from 5pm (boy am I glad we did!) but it made for gorgeous snowy/white elopement photos :) I am really happy with the way these turned out at the end. This was also taken with our brand new 24-70mm f2.8 lens so I am happy to report that it did really well. After their quick ceremony we took some signing photos and spent the rest of the afternoon taking couple portraits around the lake. They were easy going and ready to try any and every pose I threw at them! At some point I attempted to take some photos of their reflection in the water, but it just didn't work out the way I envisioned. Still had pretty photos, though. It was a joy helping Tarah navigate the Coloradian special event permit journey and it was well worth it. On Saturday I got the chance to see the gorgeous sun rise at the Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, Colorado. I was preparing for a portrait photography session later next week but boy was I in a mood when my alarm went off at 5:00 a.m. I'm used to waking up around 6:20 a.m. for work, but I was just being a big baby. So come 5:15 a.m. I was out the door coffee in hand. Success. When I arrived at the Lost Gulch Overlook at 6:30 a.m., my first thoughts were that I should have arrived sooner and that the area was not as large as I thought it would be. Seemed like there were 2 main overlook spots, one which shows the skyline of the city but its trees shade the sunrise and sunset view. The other was over the the left and was connected through the parking lot and walk paths. There were areas to lookout all around, but the main attraction was on top of the rocky ridges where you get a 360 view of the mountain tops and layers (sorry no photo of that... I forgot to take them haha). Other couples were nestled in various spots on the ridge, some standing, some sitting. After mentally using them as place models for photos, I found the perfect spot for portrait sunrise photos where we'll have gorgeous golden light to work with and the mountains in the background. Once settled, I took some photos of the actual sun peaking its head over the horizon and changing the colors in the sky from hues of blue and pink to golden orange. At this point I realized I wanted a photo of myself so I asked a couple to help me take a photo in exchange for me taking theirs. They agreed, thankfully! I'm not in focus but its almost perfect because we get to focus on the scenery and not my morning-outfit lol (I call the first photo - "mOtIoN"). But once I felt confident in my gauge of photos and locations I headed back down and took a few stills on the way. I almost lost my phone too at this point, because I put it on the hood of my car, forgot about it, and drove off. Welcome, one and all, to our new site! I am so excited to be able to share this new face of Swenten Photo Video. I have enjoyed working with Wordpress over the last 4 years, but I felt like it was time for a change. Wix really does a good job with making everything as seamless as possible and this transition was a breeze. I also decided that the move from "Swenten Photography" to "Swenten Photo Video" was best as the latter really leaves no room for question. What do I do? Photo and video, of course! I spent a long time on this website and if you, my reader, see anything that needs to be fixed help a girl out and send me a message! Here's to a new beginning, refreshed outlook, new exciting projects and a hurting bank account!
